Fiona Banner: Fiona Banner has long been fascinated by the emblem of the fighter plane. „It‘s hard to believe that these planes are designed for function -she says- because they are beautiful. But they are absolutely designed for function, as a bird of prey is, and that function is to kill. That we find them beautiful brings into question the very notion of beauty, but also our own intellectual and moral position. I am interested in that clash between what we feel and what we think.“
Asked about the work Mirror Fin in an interview with Patricia Bickers for Art Monthly, Banner responds: „I had that fin for ages before I knew what to do with it, then rather than add to it I decided to subtract, to strip it and polish it. I polished it to within an inch of its life and it revealed a luxurious mirror surface. Then I began to think of it as a selfportrait – not of me but of whoever was looking at it. Somehow the form of it – it is a Harrier wing – the way it slouches in the corner, took on this shape or shadow of a person. Of course it now feels like it was leading up to the Jaguar in Harrier and Jaguar“. Fiona Banner‘s intallation Harrier and Jaguar at the Tate Britain for the 2010 Duveens Commission will be open until 3 January 2011.
Diango Hernández: Found furniture, found images and found texts are relics with the power to conjure memories. Functioning as a communicative link between the artist and the viewer, they represent both material and tool for Diango Hernández; he uses them to construct his poetic narratives expressing mourning and loss.
