Bernd Becher (August 20, 1931 – June 22, 2007) and Hilla Becher (September 2, 1934 – October 10, 2015) founded Germany’s first class for artistic photography at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (1976) and developed a unique oeuvre for over 60 years. The Main and Sponsorship Prizes are awarded every two years by the Mayor of Düsseldorf advised by an independent jury of international experts. Awarding €15.000, the Main Prize endows artists, theorists, and curators who have accomplished outstanding contributions to photography or related fields of film, video, and other image-based media. The Sponsorship Prize endows artists who focus on photography, image-media, and media art with a prize of €5,000. This year, the Bernd and Hilla Becher Prize will be awarded for the second time.
