Fiona Banner, *1966 in Merseyside, UK,
lives and works in London
The London based artist Fiona Banner is mostly known for her large format handwritten or typeface printed wordscapes. Fiona Banner describes in her own words the action of feature films. She is fascinated by the near impossibility of containing action and time in a prescribed form. These epic and blow by blow accounts of the action become hypnotic texts. Her earlier wordscapes such as “Apocalypse Now” revealed Hollywood´s populistic mythologyzations of historical events, such as the Vietnam war.
“Arsewoman in Wonderland” centers on Fiona Banner´s sometimes
jarring verbal account of a porn film. In this genre of film, there is no script and the action has almost no verbal accompaniment. By describing the activity Banner comes up against the boundaries of the verbal and of description. She is confronted with a subject where the action is primal and words are absent.
