Kaloki Nyamai’s Dining in Chaos highlights the artist’s interest in painting as a sculptural medium.

Composed entirely in Nairobi, the works explore tactile density and social portraiture. Consisting of three paintings on unstretched canvas, this modern triptych depicts figures in times of global crisis. The painting Dining in Chaos(2023) inaugurates the eponymous series with acrylic, sisal rope, and dye transfer on paper over canvas. In this context, chaos is a means of social transformation and a stage for tumultuous beauty. Furthering Nyamai’s formal vocabulary, the three works presented at Unlimited address social and internal challenges amidst political conditions. An underlying question pulses throughout the works; does one stop abruptly, or carry on dining?
