The watercolours represent the first group of works directly influenced by an archive of photography for which Dammann has been working for several years.
Dammann’s decision to transfer a photographic image into painting is based on „an unexpected, vague and yet strong feeling that there is something in the photograph, albeit invisible…. As if the moment when the photographs were taken had a special meaning, and although it is impossible to transfer this by means of light into a photochemical process, an echo of that meaning is palpable.“ By repeating the photographs in a different medium, Dammann seeks to grasp this phenomenon and make it tangible. „Thus, in this respect, the watercolours are reconstructions.“ (Dammann)
Martin Dammann exhibited at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Berlin in 2002. He participated in the project Hybrid Workspace of Documenta X, the Werkleitz Biennale as well as the exhibition „Einsiedler – Vorübergehend“ at the Museum Folkwang Essen.
