Around 50 large-format watercolors and drawings, photographs and videos can be seen at Kunsthalle Recklinghausen for the Foreign Friends exhibition by Martin Damman.
For his paintings, Dammann, who studied at the universities of art in Bremen and Berlin, draws on original photos and film clips from the time of the First and Second World Wars, which he compiled into an archive. In the illustrations he selects, the events of the war itself often appear only marginally, more as a content than as a visible background. Rather, it is, for example in the „Soldier Studies“ series, the private moments and leisure activities of the soldiers on the fringes of combat operations.
