The VR-Bank Ostalb is awarding its art prize for the 21st time, an ongoing initiative since 2005. Artist Martin Dammann from Berlin impressed the jury with his work. The prize, an endowment of 5,000 euros, is granted to artists who stand out in southwest Germany’s art scene. Originally trained as a draughtsman, Martin Dammann focused on video works in the mid-1990s and eventually turned to watercolor, photography, and photo installations. His large-format watercolors defy all clichés; they address questions and themes that have rarely been depicted within this particular artistic medium, such as identity and gender roles, fascism, and colonialism. Dammann’s work moves between historical and contemporary themes and perspectives. He examines how life leaves traces and how these traces merge into history and transform into images, reflecting and changing the processes to which they refer.
