Mukenge/Schellhammer consists of Christ Mukenge (*1988 in Kinshasa, Kongo) and Lydia Schellhammer (*1992 in Konstanz, Germany). Since its formation in 2016, the duo lives and works between Germany and Kinshasa.
The title „KOMPLEXÉ“ refers to a local Kinshasa expression of „kinoiserie“. In a psychological context, the „complex“ defines the association of feelings and memories, usually unconscious, that partly condition a person’s behaviour.
We are currently living in the post-colonial period in Kinshasa. It is true that the traces of colonisation have become blurred, but they are very much present, and the psychosocial constructs of the colonial era persist. Frantz Fanon calls these psychic residues reactionary psychoses of power structures, which manifest themselves in the way people behave, in their relationship with others and in their conception of the world.
