Kontempo Kinzonzi at the National Museum of Kinshasa, ACUD Galerie, Haus der Statistik

Mukenge/Schellhammer process layers of real and imaginary pictorial worlds that shape our collective (un)conscious, and they subject themselves to a process of strategic auto-exoticization. This leads to jointly made paintings that they expand in the exhibition with scenographic interventions, digital painting and experimental videos to form a multi-dimensional, multimedia narrative. Otherness and the opposite are not merely presented or criticized, but worked upon in a shared process that asks as to its opportunities for designing different, better or simply more interesting images that can become part of our collective imaginary world.

Kinzonzi is a collaborative project by Laboratoire Kontempo and ACUD MACHT NEU BERLIN. The first part of the project took place in Kinshasa. Artists and researchers from Kinshasa and Berlin met for an exchange in Kinshasa and jointly developed an exhibition at the National Museum of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2021. In 2022, the artists and researchers met again in Berlin and presented their work in talks, roundtables, presentations and two exhibitions at the ACUD galerie and the Haus der Statistik. Laboratoire Kontempo is a platform founded by Mukenge/Schellhammer.
