Insomnia concentrates on conceptual works of the 1970s in which Burga clearly positions herself within newly developed radical conceptual strategies oft he late 1960s, distancing herself from traditional artistic expressions and striving to analyse the condition in which art forms could exist systematically.
Burga conveyed her thought processes and aesthetic programm by the means of text, (project proposals) drawing and technical scetches for objects. Since the rediscovery of Teresa Burga´s oeuvre in the early 2000, it has been our goal to research, and trace lost and unknown works. Objects were produced according to vintage instructions, installations re-constructed and re-enacted. In this context, we were able to construct an early work, the Heartbeat Machineaccording to a vintage drawing of 1970. The machine constitute the artist first attempt to contstruct a self portrait out of medical data. Two years later, this idea was incorporated at the core oft he larger installation Autorretratto. The Heartbeat Machinewas premiered in 2018 in the soloshow at the SMAK in Ghentand was later presented as part of the Radical Womanshow.
