Whereas her previous series focused more on daily reflections of her native Seoul or London, where she lives and works, the scenes and images for her Berlin gallery debut exhibition are stimulated by literary inspirations—including Arthur Rimbaud’s poetry and the novels of Roberto Bolaño. They directly reflect Jung Seo’s early education and training in French literature, as well as her enduring interest in the power of storytelling. Teeming with visions of beauty and possibility, the potent images in her show become a metaphor for the artist-poet-reader, navigating uncharted realms of disparate sensory experiences. At times they are touched with regret or loneliness, but they ultimately affirm the complexity of human relationships and our deep need for connection.

Having followed Jung Seo’s work over time, I have been struck by the way literature has increasingly become not simply a reference point, but a space in which her paintings can unfold. She moves freely between the remembered and the imagined, allowing fragments of stories, places, and sensations to gather into something distinctly her own. There is an openness and vulnerability in these new works that invites us not only to look, but to enter into their atmosphere and linger there.
