María Magdalena Campos-Pons (b. 1959, Matanzas, Cuba) is a renowned artist celebrated for her evocative explorations of memory and diasporic identity through an interdisciplinary practice that spans performance, painting, photography, video, sculpture, and installation. Born in the sugar plantation town of La Vega, Campos-Pons grew up steeped in the cultural syncretism of her Afro-Cuban, Chinese, and Hispanic heritage, which continues to shape her work today. Her art weaves together personal and collective histories, often drawing upon the legacies of slavery, displacement, and colonialism, as well as themes of spirituality, feminism, resilience, and transformation.
